Off the record: Newcastle

With more and more indie stores popping up, there's ample opportunity to pick up that LP you’ve been dying to get your hands on. So here are our picks for where you should be vinyl shopping in the North East…

586 Records - 65 High St, NE8 2AP

First off is 586 which has over 15,000 records stocked on its shelves from electronic, disco, indie and techno. It’s no wonder they’ve got an eclectic amount of nightclub bangers as owner and DJ Antony Daly has played right across Newcastle’s club scene and is also an avid LP collector. Antony’s expertise is unrivalled and he is always more than happy to share his music catalogue with the people of the Tyneside. There are also several listening stations in the shop with the aim to keep the space as social as possible. 586 is a music lover's dream.

JG Windows - 1-7 Central Arcade, NE1 5BP

One of the UK’s longest-established music stores lies within the stunning Central Arcade after being established in 1908. JG Windows oozes musical heritage and upon stepping through their doors it is any music fan's heaven. As well as stocking a mightily impressive record collection of new releases and exclusive records, they stock every kind of musical instrument you can imagine across their three floors. Despite being at the heart of North East’s music scene for over a century, nobody is reminiscing about the past here. Just be warned your day will inevitably slip away from you whenever you visit.

RPM Music - 4 Old George Yard, NE1 1EZ

Thirty five years of experience is something to be in awe of, and you’ll be getting that same feeling when you step through the doors of one of Newcastle’s best-loved record shops, RPM Music. This store has always been popular with music lovers throughout the time they’ve been selling wax in their previous four spaces. Inevitably this is due to RPM’S fantastic discounts on some desirable records, their wide range of box sets available and the vast amount of genres they cater to. It’s definitely worth stopping by to grab yourself a bargain.

Vinyl Guru - 69 Westgate Rd, NE1 1SG

To be branded as Sam Fender’s favourite record store, there was instant pressure already, but Vinyl Guru delivers on every single level. They house tens of thousands of new and pre-owned records from all genres including their ingeniously coined concept of a video game music vinyl store ChipFreq @chipfreq. Along with their music knowledge, the stores are also gurus for taking care of your LPs, being a prolific and long-established supplier of vinyl record accessories.
